about
This piece is about calm and commotion. Layers of ambient, synthesised sounds form the basis of the piece and these are made from recordings of the violin. They reflect a state of contemplation which we may feel when we are alone, when we allow our minds to rest. In contrast to this are soundscapes recorded in Morocco and Madagascar, two African countries where life is extremely communal. These soundscapes reflect everyday human chaos and our collective energy— recognisable and rousing sounds such as drumming, traffic and children’s laughter. The piece is entitled Olona, the Malagasy word for people, and it explores the impact that human interaction can have on our state of mind.
